What are French Drains?
French Drains are underground, gravity fed systems that consist of a trench filled with gravel, or engineered rock, geo-textile fabrics and a perforated pipe designed to facilitate the efficient flow of water. French drains are engineered to combat water-related issues, including soil erosion, water accumulation, and foundation damage. They are particularly useful in preventing foundational flooding and safeguarding the structural integrity of buildings. The main purpose of a french drain is to absorb subsurface water, and release it away from the home at a natural drainage point.
What are the benefits of a French drain system?
A great part about french drain systems is that they are likely to last a very long time. These systems are built with an extremely durable, flexible plastic and are placed just under the surface of your ground, with proper maintenance and cleaning, they can last over 20 years! Aside from their great lifespan, the systems are are out of sight, meaning you wont have to see massive piles of drain rock, or large pipes and drain channels that cause an eye sore.
What are the Drawbacks of a French drain system?
The only downfall to a basic French drain system is that they rely on gravity to direct the flow of water. If water is pooling in a large low spot in your yard, or if your home is lower than than any natural drainage areas, it likely wont be a helpful solution to remedy the flooded area.
